Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 221 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations BEFORE we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing/reading on a weekly basis in an informal forum.

it will never be deep enough
In reading this story i got a bit confused as to who she/he was talking to , but than i figured it was a she whom was talking to herself all the thoughts that were going through her mind about seeing her ex with another girl, saying she doesn't care but knowing she really does where she says "did you talk to van at all. do you think ava is in love with him". but as i went back to the beginning of the story it showed she told someone to sit down with her; gracia maybe? and than the whole story is based off all the thoughts and questions she had but no response what so ever.

Annabel, p 80
Was the theft, only emotional or did it become physical? Was the "crack" the broken part of her when the attention stopped or because the inappropriate attention started? Was she "hooking"? or innocent world was she tutoring fellow college students in her chemistry class?

OBJECTS OF DESIRE
Seems like the character Xin Bao had a wild night all for getting his desire to come true. which did
happen seems like in this story Xin Bao raped her. In this story Xin Bao steals a macaw to give to his
so called love because she wanted the bird. Fast Forward he woke up with a hangover and the
macaw squawked "JAIL, JAIL, JAIL". for two reasons stealing the macaw and for my guess raping
her. my question is, was this a dream.

AT HOME WITH RAPPER'S DELIGHT
This short story made me think how music influences change ; plus along with that change is to move
forward. Examples of this " his father is disco song" my guess is the main character's father is
stuck in the 70's and not willing to move forward. The main character graduating in 1997, being
the last person to finish with having an email. Rapper's delight could be an indication of a time when
things were fun and flashy like the 80's. Where it says ''it's 2001, MCs have stopped talking about
funky their beat is and giving shout-outs at the end of a song'' meaning music now and at the time is
more introverted and less creative like in times past. Basically the message of this story is music has
the power to change time.

Public Fiction Project
If any of you want to attend the creative writing event
next Wed (see below), you may count it as your Public Fiction Project. If you'd
like to read, let me know and I'll tell Prof. Tayson.
Original Message:
Dear friends and colleagues,
As many of you know, today marks the inauguration of
three weeks of on-campus activities designed to enhance this year’s Common
Read. As our students read and discuss
Picking Cotton: Our Memoir of Injustice
and Redemption, they have the opportunity to participate in many collaborative
events. One such activity is “Self,
World and Poems that Ask Forgiveness: An
Interactive Event,” to which you and your students are cordially invited.
Wednesday, March 9
12:10 – 2
S111
In an open forum meant to address violence, forgiveness,
reconciliation, (the Oscars?), and redemption in today’s world, Ben Miller will
lead a writing activity, and Danielle Izzo-Buckner and I will read from our work
and the works of poets as diverse as Nazim Hikmet, Lucille Clifton, William
Blake, and Adrienne Rich. Students and
faculty alike will be provided an opportunity to read works brought to the
event as well as those written during our time together.
If you or your students would like to read, let me know,
and I’ll add your names to the ongoing list.
Our aim is to generate community exchange via the written
and spoken word—so feel free to pass along this information to students, other
faculty, and staff (an event poster will soon magically appear in your
mailboxes).
Thanks, and we look forward to seeing you on March 9.
All the best,
Richard Tayson
I am really enjoying reading "The Best Small Fictions" its different from a lot of the other books I have read. I enjoy the fact that its not one continuous story. It keeps the reader engaged, by having a book of several different short stories. The short stories also range from different generes which help the reader, like myself engaged throughout the entire book.

Not about Liz
Just finish reading "Not about Liz" and wow what an ending! When the writter mentions all the kids with the Ray as the middle name I knew we were talking about a place in the South. The use of the word "looming" when describing the father, makes me feel like he's got something to hide. The ending shocked me because he told me in the beginning that this wasn't about Liz.
