Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 221 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations BEFORE we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing/reading on a weekly basis in an informal forum.

Small Fiction Readings

One of the stories that has personally stuck out for me was "The Third Time my Father Tried To Kill me" because it's interesting to see that from the very start, this boy has grown up under someone that was just vicious and seems to have no real sympathy for the son. Nearly asphyxiating from birth and then drowning and then a brutal beating. His father is not a father any son would ever want to be born under.

Something interesting as well is that the events are played backwards rather then forward and he shows snippets from his life from oldest to youngest. I believe the reason for that is to try and signify the downward spiral of the father, that even to the youngest, he really has no real control over himself if he was willing to do that to a baby.

Also, no, I have not stolen any techniques from the fictions that I read but I might begin to.
