Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 221 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations BEFORE we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing/reading on a weekly basis in an informal forum.

Lewis Caroll

After reading this story a few times I came to realize that this is a story about the Devil and God.  Carrol represents the devil and Isa is God.  First Carrol is given status by having a reserved seat in the theater. Meaning the devil has some sort of status in the grand sceem of things, but he has a bag of tricks. Writter goes into great detail describing ISa's blue dress, I assume this is because blue will represent the color of God or light. You immediately get the sense that Corral has some distain for Isa from his remark about her being to old for the role of Alice. The title of the play is not the original " Alice in Wonderland" instead it is turned into " Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" giving me the feeling that this is not the same old story and the play is set in present day. the writter makes a point to meantion that Carrol leaves his seat with his bag to go backstage. Going backstage seems he's going to the world behind the world. A place where God would exist. Upon arriving the backstage area  Carrol ask Isa "are you Alice?" This is almost like he's asking "are you God?" When Isa response "Yes"  he almost cut her off by saying you can't be Alice in know her personally. Then mocks her by asking what part of her are you playing her leg or shoulder?

This is where I feel the battle ensues, Caroll goes into his bag to grab red paint and smear Isa particularly all over her blue dres. The red paint is a symbol for blood meaning murder the most powerful sin. then the writter actually mentions the word devil in the next phrase. He goes into his bag leaving red finger prints meaning leaving the evidence with no care in the world.

When Isa keeps saying that you "You did not image me" " you don't own me" I feels like there is lesson in it all. The no matter what bad thoughts might come in your mind. They don't control you.

  1. Hey Ravi:
Actually, Alices Advertures in Wonderland is the orginal title of the novel. Did you know that Lewis Carol was the author of that novel? Does that affect your reading at all?
