Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 221 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations BEFORE we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing/reading on a weekly basis in an informal forum.

In the story Sh'Khol, Rebecca the mom at the end has come to the conclusion that her young son is spreading his wings and becoming a young man wanting to become more independent.  She sadly realizes that probably way earlier than she would have liked to have thought, her basic aid as a mother is no longer needed.  Like the story Jack July, where Jack is trying to figure his place in the world because his former girl friend has cast him off similarly as Tomas has freed Rebecca.  Similar in the basic way people tend to do when they can meet their own needs, people in their lives who have supplied those needs become superfluous to them.  Jack's girlfriend Rhonda has decided that Jack needs to be away from her.  Now we have two characters Jack and Rebecca who probably are going to experience a considerable amount of loneliness and also nervousness over the need and desire to find their own way in a big world without being connected.
