What a poignant story. From the beginning it's a good person who I don't think even had a name who was the author, narrator, main character. He appears to be a gay man in a relationship with a younger man. He seems to be in his senior years in what sounds like a boring or loveless relationship.
Was a point in the story where I thought it was possible that they were not gay but a father and son that live together. But them being in a relationship that lost its luster became more realistic.
Though resistant at first to receiving the dog the love relationship between him and his new friend who is strong bond as if a first love. This made me happy.
Now he had a "partner" that they could share love with each other while the other partner was always traveling. It was good for him to have a new companion.
Though dark and light are compared in the two very dark episodes involving death and near death they are similar in the nature of emotions felt and expressed.
When the first male partner died it was tragic Ying. When is dog literally died and stay dead for a few minutes but he was able to resuscitate him Yang. Those with two different outcomes with similar roller coaster rides of emotions were compared well in his memories.
Feeling empathy for him after his final loss, his first love gone, his boyfriend is never around, and his dog died (is put to sleep) he asks the housekeeper/caretaker "not to leave him."
Poignant.
Nice Yin/Yang reading of the story, Charles!
