Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 221 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations BEFORE we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing/reading on a weekly basis in an informal forum.

The Fugue

We're going to spend time in class analyzing the other story, so I'd like you to respond to "The Fugue" here:

  • Why is it titled "The Fugue"? Look up its definition. The psychiatric meaning of the word definitely plays a part in this story. Does the musical one?
  • Why the reoccuring line "Wild Turkey wakes up"?
  • Why isn't this story told in chronilogical order?
  • Why all the repetitions of "Jeannie in a bottle!" on p. 104. Okay, so he's really saying this, but the narrator could say "Wild Turkey says ____ fifty times." Why is it written out?
  • Why is Wild Turkey called Wild Turkey? Why do the soldiers all have nicknames?
